Grillout: Monday, October 1, 2012
A free lunch was provided by Purdue ANS to the campus on the Engineering Mall. Members had a great time hanging out on the lawn and grilling together while the public was educated on nuclear science while waiting for their food.
Sophomore Orientation: Tuesday, October 2, 2012
At Purdue, engineers become part of their specific engineering major at the beginning of sophomore year. ANS sought to welcome the new incoming class to Nuclear Engineering with some helpful hints for success and some fun trivia questions.
Bowling: Wednesday, October 3, 2012
To blow some steam off, Purdue ANS members enjoyed a few games of bowling at the nearby Purdue Memorial Union.
Nuclear Engineering Opportunity Night (NEON): Tuesday & Wednesday, September 11 & 12, 2012
NEON is an annual career fair put on entirely by Purdue ANS that features nuclear-related companies and is open to the university. Companies were allotted a half hour information session for early registrants and all attending companies had a booth to interface with interested students. The attendees at NEON in 2012 were:
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
American Electric Power
Argonne National Laboratory
Enercon Services, Inc
National Nuclear Security Adminstration
Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory
Pacific Gas and Electric Company
Boy Scout Day: Saturday, September 29, 2012
A group of Boy Scouts from Indiana learned about nuclear science to earn their Nuclear Science Merit Badge.
Purdue University Multi-dimensional Integral Test Assembly (PUMA): Friday, October 19, 2012
PUMA is a thermal-hydraulics and reactor safety test integral test facility, specializing in boiling water reactor (BWR) analysis, operated by Dr. Mamoru Ishii and Dr. Takashi Hibiki near the Purdue University Airport. They were gracious enough to entertain a few Purdue ANS members in a tour of the facility, including the control room.
LaSalle County Generating Station: Friday, November 9, 2012
Purdue ANS attended a joint tour with fellow ANS student sections from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign of Exelon's LaSalle County Generating Station. It was many attendees' first time seeing a nuclear power plant and everyone enjoyed seeing the boiling water reactors (BWRs) at LaSalle. Members were lucky enough to visit the structures outside of containment, the spent fuel pools, the turbines in the turbine building, the live control room, and more.
Dominion Company Night: Monday, February 11, 2013
Dominion attended Purdue ANS's February general meeting and gave a presentation about their company and experiences. Both were nuclear engineers and Purdue alumni who were also visiting campus for Co-op Days.
Cook Nuclear Power Plant: Tuesday, February 26, 2013
Purdue ANS toured American Electric Power's Cook Nuclear Power Plant. Two rotational engineers showed them around and one of them was a recent graduate from Purdue University. The group visited the Cook Energy Information Center, the training facility complete with a full-scale control room simulation, the turbine building, and more.
